FAQ
Please note the Family Academy is DIFFERENT, it’s out of the box, therefore questions and answers may not correlate well with traditional schools, coops and academies.
Imagine a family unit going to college as a unit with other family units, except without the traditional academic menu, without the dependence on teachers and without the “get a job” orientation. This can be thought of as a very well networked and empowered DIY and self-help program.
If it’s a family academy does the whole family take classes together?
A: Yes and No. Not very often as a whole family unit, though this will happen. Usually learning best occurs through the groups of four individuals supported by the different roles of family members and utilizing consultants, consultants introduced later as specialists and experts regarding the subject material being learned.
Q: Will my children graduate with a highschool diploma?
A: Not a diploma from the FA. Children will often test or study under institutions that provide this. Our focus will be helping them build what we call a “Living Portfolio” which we believe will be superior to a diploma.
Q: How do we interact with the other families?
A: Families primarily interact with 3 other families making a “group of four”. This will allow each family to be seen as a whole unit, allow for more intimacy and to cut down on the noise of a larger group (we expect these groups of people to be 16-20 on average). This gives the family unit a place among peers further establishing the family unit as an independent entity so that it can be grounded, supported and strengthened with increasing capacity to meet its internal and external needs while meeting the demands of the broader community.
Actual engagement will be determined by proximity and frequency according to need. Each event should be in its optimal setting.
Q: Are there classes for children and classes for adults?
A: Yes. As wanted and needed.
Q: What curriculum does the Family Academy use?
A: The best available. Families purchase their own learning materials as desired. If this is a problem it will be solved by each family or group of families. The collective voluntary insight of the whole academy will always be adding to the solutions list for this one.
Will there be a list of classes that my children can take with other kids in the academy?
A: Yes and No. There will not be a list of static classes to choose from provided by the academy institution. Individuals and groups of four will engage consultants as needed to learn what they choose. These “classes” will be divided into groups of 4 and supported by each child’s full set of personal-relations including their core “group of four” and family relations.
What is the age limit?
A: There is no age limit, though individuals who are college age 17+ and single or just recently married, may find that the J&A Social Change-U program will meet their needs better. People ages 55+ may find that the J&A Hearts To Children program will work better for their needs than the Family Academy. Children ages 0-25 who are pre-college should do very well in the Family Academy.
What is the cost?
A: $25 monthly subscription
